The OriginalsJessica Garland-Blake

Irish-born Londoner, designer and founder of Ihavethisthingfor.com styles her edit of the Hunter Original collection for spring/summer 2017.

Born in Dun Laoghaire, into a family of tailors, painters, graphic designers and photographers, Jessica Garland-Blake has been immersed in the world of fashion and design since childhood. Now a fashion student and designer, living in the heart of London, she has built a significant following thanks to her adaptable, modern style.

What inspired you to become involved with the fashion world?

My grandparents were tailors and my mum bought me Vogue from a very early age. All I knew is that I was going to be involved in fashion in some way, there was never any other option.

Where do you go to find inspiration?

I still have subscriptions to Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar. I know people aren’t buying magazines as much these days but I adore them and always find inspiration in them, especially Tim Walker’s shoots. I also love bloggers such as Man Repeller, Nina Suess, Maja Wyh, they’re so original. London has some of the best fashion and art exhibitions in the world too and those are always inspiring.

You’re obviously very inspired by the art world how does this feed into your photography and styling?

My mum is a graphic designer, my dad is a photographer and my step-mother is a painter. Growing up, I was always encouraged to pick up a camera or a paintbrush and this led me to play with mixed media such as layering paint on my photographs. I also used abstract paintings as an inspiration for my final year collection.

How important is living in London to your work now?

Right now, it’s very important. I try to use ethical fabrics in my collection and there are so many ethical fabric shows in London that just wouldn't have come to Ireland. As a blogger, you can work from anywhere in the world, Wi-Fi depending, but when you’re trying to build your own lingerie business, meeting suppliers and potential influencers, working in a city like London is so important.

What is your go-to look for a rainy day in London?

As much as I love the Original Wellington, I’d go for a pair of the Original Chelsea Boots with a simple pair of jeans and a rain coat.

What is your favourite piece from the spring/summer 2017 collection?

I like the Original Utility Jacket in white. A great piece as we head towards summer and the inevitable showers that come with it!
